Seventeen: What is Shake It Up: Made In Japan about? Spill it!
Zendaya Coleman: In the movie, our characters win a dance competition where they get to go to Japan and make a video game. My character really wants to see the sights and experience Japanese culture, but Bella’s character is more into the stardom aspect. That causes some drama between us. I’m really excited for the movie because we don’t just dance in it, we sing too. My favorite song in the movie is one Rocky and Cici sing during karaoke. It really shows off our voices.
17: Does the movie have a lot of Japanese fashion?
ZC: There’s a big song for the finale where I wear a classic, Betsey Johnson dress. It’s edged up with a mini letterman jacket and some really cute Doc Martens that were actually custom-made for the movie. They have little black crystals on them and are so cute. I wish I got to keep them!
17: Are there any other fun surprises we can expect from the movie?
ZC: The Blue Man group is in it! They were really fun, but kind of creepy! We never saw them without their makeup on. Bella kept trying to get them to break character and let us touch their makeup, but we weren’t allowed to because it’s oily and comes right off!
17: You and Bella are such good friends and hang out on-set and in real life. What are some of your favorite memories with her?
ZC: It’s impossible to choose just one! We make memories every day and everywhere we go, it’s just shenanigans. Something always happens. I think the secret to a really great friendship is just creating fun memories whenever you’re with that person.
17: Do you ever get sick of each other?
ZC: Bella is a surprise every day. That’s the best part of our friendship. She’s very bubbly and bright, and I’m more mellow, so we are kind of like our characters in a sense. We fit together so well because whatever I lack she has and whatever she lacks I have.
