Disney Channel Breaks New Ground with Good Luck Charlie Episode

In a first for the Disney Channel, next season an episode of Good Luck Charlie will feature a family with two moms.

Producers are currently casting the couple, with production set for next week. The episode will air in early 2014 as part of Good Luck Charlie's final season. Because Good Luck Charlie is coming to a close, the characters are only expected to appear in this one episode.

In the storyline, parents Amy and Bob Duncan (Leigh-Allyn Baker and Eric Allan Kramer) set up a playdate for preschooler Charlie (Mia Talerico) and one of her new friends. When the kid arrives, the Duncans learn that Charlie's pal has two moms. That's fine, but the potential new friendship is put to the test as one mom chats with Amy, and the other is stuck listening to Bob's dull stories.

The playdate is actually the secondary story in the episode, as much of the action will center on Teddy (Bridgit Mendler) and her best friend Ivy, as Ivy prepares to head off to college.

But Disney Channel understands the groundbreaking nature of featuring a same-sex couple on one of its sitcoms and took extra care in crafting the episode. "This particular storyline was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisors," a Disney Channel spokesperson says. "Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness."

Disney Channel already tested the waters last year with its on-air social outreach campaign "Make Your Mark." In one segment, a teen with two moms was featured, a move that was called a "big step forward" by GLAAD.

Disney Channel’s ‘Good Luck Charlie’ To End Its Run

EXCLUSIVE: After four seasons, 100 episodes and a hit TV movie, Disney Channel has decided to end its sitcom Good Luck Charlie. Production on the series will wrap soon, with new episodes slated to roll out through early 2014. The series, executive produced by creators Phil Baker & Drew Vaupen and Dan Staley, also will remain on Disney Channel’s daily schedules around the world. “On behalf of everyone at Disney Channel, it’s been our great pleasure to work with the extraordinary producers Phil Baker, Drew Vaupen and Dan Staley and the writers and crew of Good Luck Charlie,” a rep for the kids channel said. “We could not have dreamt of a better cast than Bridgit Mendler, Jason Dolley, Leigh-Allyn Baker, Bradley Steven Perry, Mia Talerico and Eric Allan Kramer (and even little Logan Moreau as Baby Toby!) and the many guest stars who make the series so special.” The series, which centers on the everyday adventures of the busy Duncan clan — working full-time parents Bob and Amy; their three teen kids PJ, Teddy and Gabe; and fast-growing toddler Charlie — helped launch the recording career of Mendler and collected more than 25 million online votes in its “name the baby poll.”

Good Luck Charlie, part of Disney Channel’s strategy for targeting families with more authentic stories told from the young characters’ POV but also relatable to their parents, was a breakout for Disney Channel, earning a second-season renewal three months into its freshman run in spring 2010. It hit its zenith with the December 2011 movie Good Luck Charlie: It’s Christmas, which drew a 8.3 million viewers to become the most-watched cable live-action movie of the year. The show still is doing respectable business. For 2012, it was TV’s #1 series across kids 2-11, kids 6-11 and tweens 9-14. Year to date, it is averaging 3 million total viewers per episode and is the #1 series in its time period among all kid demos — 2-11, 6-11 and tweens. However, Disney Channel tends to pull the plug on its shows, even the most successful ones like Hannah Montana and Wizards Of Waverly Place, once they hit the 100 episode mark. As the channel puts it, “all good things must come to an end.”

 Although it has not officially been announced, it is rumoured that numerous cast members from the Disney Channel series "JESSIE" will make an appearance on the final season of Good Luck Charlie. Skai Jackson who plays the role of Zuri on the show JESSIE tweeted the following picture on her official twitter page (@OfficialSkai), which shows her dressing room door on the set of Good Luck Charlie.

Heather Locklear's Daughter Ava Sambora Guest Stars in "Good Luck Charlie"

Following Ava Sambora's acting debut in Judd Apatow's This Is 40, Heather Locklear's only child filmed a guest-starring role in Disney Channel's Good Luck Charlie.

In the episode, Ava, 15 – whose dad is Richie Sambora – plays Charlie Duncan 10 years into the future.

The show revolves around the Denver, Colo.-based Duncan family, who try to adjust to the births of their fourth and fifth children.

Of working on the episode, which is slated to premiere this summer, Ava tells PEOPLE: "[It] was amazing and also extremely fun. Everyone on set was so sweet and super funny. It was just over all a really great experience and I had a great time."

Disney Channel have released the official photos from the Good Luck Charlie Season 4 photoshoot. Season four of the hit family comedy “Good Luck Charlie” premieres SUNDAY, APRIL 28 (7:30-8:00 p.m., ET/PT) with a special performance by Disney’s The Muppets. Guest stars Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Animal join series stars Bridgit Mendler and Leigh-Allyn Baker to perform a show-stopping, Muppet-ational original song.

In the premiere episode, the Duncan Family decides to build their dream house after the family home is devastated by termites. Everyone, with the exception of Charlie, is excited at the prospect of a new and larger home. However, Teddy has a change of heart after a dream in which Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Animal convince her that the old family home is really the house of her dreams. The episode’s original song “Dream House” is written by Grammy and Emmy-award winning Adam Schlesinger (“That Thing You Do,” “Fountains of Wayne,” “Tony Awards”) and produced by Schlesinger and Steven M. Gold (“Saturday Night Live,” “The Colbert Report”).

Actress Marieve Herington Heads Back to School in Fourth Season of Disney Channel’s “Good Luck Charlie"”

Los Angeles, CA – Beginning May 5th, actress MARIEVE HERINGTON hits the books once again as a recurring guest star joining the final season of the hit Disney Channel show GOOD LUCK CHARLIE, which kicks off on April 28, 2013.

In the fourth season of GOOD LUCK CHARLIE, PJ Duncan (Jason Dolley) enrolls in cooking school where he meets another new student, Winnie (Herington), who becomes his friend and cooking partner. All the while Teddy (Bridgit Mendler) works on college applications, discovers a new guy in town and works at remaining good friends with Spencer. This isn’t the first time Herington has been cast as a memorable student. She recently gained attention for her recurring role on the CBS mega-hit “How I Met Your Mother” as ‘Betty’, a smart but frank student of Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor). Her on-camera television credits also include appearances on “The New Normal,” “Modern Family” and the upcoming USA series, “Graceland.”

This Canadian born actress has appeared in numerous live action shows and animation projects in both the U.S. and Canada. Recognized by millions of animation enthusiasts and youngsters for her voice, Herington recently voiced the character of the Hyrax -- the little furry creatures who help Sid and the gang -- on Fox’s animated hit “Ice Age: Continental Drift.” She has also lent her talents to hit video games like "Dance Central" as Miss Aubrey and "Carnival Games." Disney Channel have released the official promo for the Season 4 Premiere episode of Good Luck Charlie titled, "Duncan Dream House". The episode premieres on Sunday, April 28 at 7.30pm.

In the episode, after the family home is devastated by termites, the Duncan Family decides to build their dream house, which excites everyone but Charlie. Disney XD has ordered “Mighty Med,” a live-action comedy series inspired by the extraordinary world of super heroes and comic books — starring Bradley Steven Perry (Disney Channel’s “Good Luck Charlie”) as Kaz and Jake Short (Disney Channel’s “A.N.T. Farm”) as Oliver. The multi-camera series will begin production in Los Angeles, California in July for a fall 2013 premiere on Disney XD. The announcement was made by Adam Bonnett, Senior Vice President, Original Programming, Disney Channel.

In making the announcement, Bonnett said, “Bradley Steven Perry and Jake Short are two incredibly popular Disney stars whose comedic timing and relatable on-screen friendship make them the perfect pair for ‘Mighty Med.’ Our Disney XD audience will go on a journey with these characters, two comic book fanboys whose love and knowledge of sci-fi, fantasy and super heroes land them the coolest after school job ever — working at Mighty Med, a hospital for super heroes.”

The series follows best friends Kaz and Oliver who, while hanging out at their favorite comic book store, inadvertently discover a secret wing of a hospital that caters to super heroes and comic book characters.

Also starring are newcomer Paris Berelc as Skylar Storm and Devan Leos (“Madea’s Witness Protection”) as Alan.

The pilot was created and written by Emmy Award-nominee Jim Bernstein (Disney’s “Phineas and Ferb”) and Andy Schwartz (“Scrubs”), and directed by Eric Dean Seaton (“Kickin’ It”). Stephen Engel (Disney Channel’s “A.N.T. Farm,” “The Big Bang Theory”) and Bernstein served as executive producers and Schwartz served as supervising producer. “Mighty Med” is a production of It’s A Laugh Productions, Inc.

In season four, Luke Benward, star of the upcoming Disney Channel Original Movie “Cloud 9,” joins the cast for a special six-episode story arc. Cyrina Fiallo Reappears on Good Luck Charlie Season 4

Cyrina Fiallo, a recurring guest star who plays one of Teddy Duncan's best-friends named 'Vonnie' in Good Luck Charlie will be returning in Season 4 of the series. Cyrina Fiallo was last seen in the Season 3 finale episode titled "All Fall Down" in which Spencer (Shane Harper) gets the opportunity to start college in Boston a semester early, and Teddy (Mendler) encourages him to go, not realizing how hard a long distance relationship can be.

For the week of January 14, 2013, Disney Channel once again reigned over the kids’ TV landscape, delivering a clean sweep on a Total Day basis for the 3rd consecutive week, ranking as the #1 TV network across Kids 2-11 (955,000/2.4 rating), Kids 6-11 (620,000/2.6 rating) and Tweens 9-14 (560,000/2.4 rating) and as cable TV’s #1 network in Total Viewers (1.8 million). Moreover, in Kids 6-11 and Tweens 9-14, Disney Channel has ranked as TV’s #1 network on a weekly basis for 84 consecutive weeks. 

• Competitively, Disney Channel towered over Nickelodeon by double digits for the 63rd consecutive week in Kids 6-11 (+52% – vs. 407,000), and the 65th week in a row in Tweens 9-14 (+95% – vs. 287,000), levying its 2nd-biggest competitive advantage ever over Nickelodeon in Tweens.

• In Prime, Disney Channel extended its streak as the #1 cable TV network to 403 consecutive weeks in Kids 6-11 (1.1 million/4.5 rating – over 7 1/2 years) and to 139 consecutive weeks in Tweens 9-14 (952,000/4.0 rating – over 2 1/2 years), and placed a solid #2 in Total Viewers (2.5 million), outdelivering the #3 network, TBS, by a considerable 39% (vs. 1.8 million).

With one week remaining in January 2013, Disney Channel will rank as the month’s #1 most-watched cable TV network in Total Day in Total Viewers, and in major kid demos will be the #1 TV network for the 21st consecutive month in Kids 6-11 and for the 33rd in Tweens 9-14.
