Given previous hits like 'High School Musical,' marketers flock to latest Disney Channel Original Movie

Marketers typically shy away from pairing up with films unless they’re based on an existing — and already popular — property. But with hits like “High School Musical,” “Camp Rock” and “The Cheetah Girls,” the Disney Channel Original Movie has become enough of a brand magnet on its own.

To help hype the release of next month’s “Teen Beach Movie,” Disney Channel has lined up Best Western and Honda, who will both launch pricey nationwide ad campaigns for the surf-rock musical. The hotel chain’s campaign will also stretch into Canada.

The film is essentially Disney Channel’s homage to the beach-set musicals of the 1960s like “Beach Party” and “Beach Blanket Bingo,” that starred former Mouseketeer Annette Funicello, as well as “Grease” and “Austin and Ally.”

Directed by Jeffrey Hornaday (Disney Channel’s “Geek Charming”), “Teen Beach Movie” revolves around high school friends who find themselves transported into their favorite movie, “Wet Side Story.” David Lawrence (“High School Musical”) produced the score.

Retailers including Walmart, Target, Toys R Us, Kohls, Kmart and Disney Stores also are ready to fill store shelves with “Teen Beach Movie” merchandise, with each getting their own product lines that spans apparel, home decor, dolls, bedding, lunch kits, books, stationery and school supplies aimed at 6-14-year-olds.

Taking a bet on an unknown property is risky — especially with merchandise featuring characters kids don’t yet know. But Disney Channel has been able to tout the success of its previous pics and popularity of stars it has cast in “Teen Beach Movie” to attract partners.

Over the past 11 years, Disney Original Movies have ranked as TV’s top film among tweens. Nearly six years after its premiere, “High School Musical 2” is still the No. 1 scripted cable TV telecast of all time with 18.7 million total viewers.

The “Teen Beach Movie” cast also includes Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell and Grace Phipps, stars of Disney Channel hits “Austin & Ally” and ABC Family’s “The Fosters” and “The Nine Lives of Chloe King.” Ross also headlines the band R5.

Those elements enticed Best Western to return and promote a Disney Channel film for the sixth time (it started with “Camp Rock”), while “Teen Beach Movie” will mark Honda’s fourth (that kicked off with “High School Musical 2”).

“When you have companies coming back four and six times, it’s because it worked,” said Rita Ferro, executive VP, Disney media sales and marketing. “It’s a Disney Channel Original Movie and that’s a franchise for us that’s consistently been the number one movie on cable year after year.”

Both Best Western and Honda will launch TV, radio, online, mobile and social media ads, and sponsor sweepstakes for the film, which premieres on Disney Channel on July 19. The film bows even earlier on July 15 to registered users of the WATCH Disney Channel app on mobile devices and WATCHDisneyChannel.com.

As part of its deal, Honda will get a sponsored by credit on the film, repeats and its planned sing-along special. The automaker will also create a co-branded destination on DisneyChannel.com, which will promote the company’s Odyssey minivan.

In addition to its planned marketing, Best Western will sponsor episodes of “Austin & Ally,” to extend its association with Lynch, and a portal on Disney.com that will enable kids to create mashups of “Teen Beach Movie” content to share with friends.

The movies “aren’t only about kids,” Ferro said. “It’s about the cross-family audience. The audience reach is so broad. It’s an entry point for multiple generations.”

The partners should also be able to benefit from their tie-in with the homevid release, as well, which will debut exclusively at Walmart on July 19, and at most other retailers on July 30, close to its TV bow.

A soundtrack becomes available July 16 from Walt Disney Records that features 12 songs plus three instructional bonus tracks offering up dance lessons.

Disney Channel also is producing a 10-city “Teen Beach Movie Beach Party” event tour at Simon Malls, Radio Disney events in 31 markets across the U.S., and is tossing out seven foot “Teen Beach Movie” branded beach balls at One Direction and R5 concerts across the U.S.

Disney Channel Orders Third Season for “Austin & Ally”

Disney Channel has ordered a third season of "Austin & Ally," TV's #1 comedy series in Kids 2-11, it was announced today by Adam Bonnett, Senior Vice President, Original Programming, Disney Channels Worldwide. The series stars Ross Lynch, Laura Marano, Raini Rodriguez and Calum Worthy. Production resumes in Los Angeles in July, with Season Three scheduled to premiere in October 2013.

When they learn they’re stuck that way for 24 hours, or until they learn a lesson, they realize Flynn will have to dance for CeCe on “Shake It Up Chicago!” and CeCe will have to learn tuba and nail Flynn’s audition for the marching band. Meanwhile, Ty thinks Rocky is trying to kill him since he didn’t put her in that week’s dance.

Austin & Ally “Partners & Parachutes” TV Ratings

Disney Channel's Sunday night episode premiere of the Austin & Ally episode titled "Partners & Parachutes" gained 4.380 million viewers, making it it's 3rd most watched episode ever, which aired at 8.00pm.
In the episode, after talking to her mom and Trish about Austin, Ally decides to focus on her music career now that she’s conquered her stage fright. Meanwhile, Austin is unsure about his friendship with Kira.

ALPHARETTA — Three teen stars from Nickelodeon and Disney's hottest television shows will visit North Point Mall on Feb. 23 and Perimeter Mall on Feb. 24 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to promote Visit Myrtle Beach.

Noah Munck, stars as Gibby on Nickelodeon's "iCarly," Calum Worthy, stars as Dez on Disney's "Austin & Ally," and Peyton List, stars as Emma on Disney's "Jessie," will headline the event promoting Myrtle Beach as the ultimate vacation destination.

Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis hopes to meet Disney Channel stars

Quvenzhané Wallis, the 9-year-old 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' actress nominated for an Academy Award, is a fan of Disney Channel and Disney XD actors.

Quvenzhané Wallis is excited to be an Oscar nominee, primarily because it gives her the chance to meet some movie actors. Yet, when pressed, the 9-year-old star of "Beasts of the Southern Wild" says it's the stars of her favorite television shows "Jessie" and "Austin & Ally" that are most appealing to her.

"I want to meet everybody on Disney Channel and Disney XD that are alive," she said in a phone interview Friday.

Wallis and "Beasts" had been critical favorites since last year's Sundance Film Festival. But the film — which so far has grossed about $11 million at the box office — wasn't widely known in mainstream circles until the Oscar nominations were announced Thursday. "Beasts" racked up four nominations, including best picture and director, and a lead actress nod for Wallis, a resident of Houma, La., and the youngest actress ever to be nominated for an Academy Award.

Wallis celebrated her historical recognition with Thursday evening's Critics' Choice Awards, where she won the best young actress prize. She said she especially enjoyed the party following the show, where she danced with her mom and her brothers, dressed in a sparkly purple gown.

Only 5 when she auditioned for the role of Hushpuppy in "Beasts," Wallis says that she wanted to act even before she made her first movie, because, "I get to meet different directors and different people."

Those directors include "Beasts" helmer Benh Zeitlin and Steve McQueen, who worked most recently with Wallis on his Southern-set drama "Twelve Years a Slave" starring Brad Pitt. Wallis has a small part in the film, playing the daughter of Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kelsey Scott. Cameron Zeigler plays her brother.

How did the two directors differ? According to Wallis, McQueen "has a different accent and he's bigger."

Wallis says she wants to continue acting but also plans to stay in her school. The fourth-grader said some of her friends back home have seen her PG-13 debut. "Two of my friends have seen it," she said. "They said I did good."

Wallis herself has watched the movie nine times. Her favorite parts: "I like it whenever I'm eating seafood and whenever Walrus falls off the trailer," she says, referring to one of the colorful residents of the Bathtub, a fictional town in Louisiana that's been cut off from the world after a storm causes a break in a levee.

AUSTIN & ALLY star Ross Lynch on fame, music and family

Ross Lynch stars as Austin Moon on Disney Channel’s hit show, AUSTIN & ALLY. Austin, an overnight Internet sensation is trying to make it big in the music business. With the help of his friend Trish De la Rosa (Raini Rodriguez) who manages Austin, which sometimes backfires no matter how hard she tries. Finally signed to a record label, Starr Records his dream is about to come true, along with his good friend Ally Dawson (Laura Marano) who writes all his songs. Ally works at her fathers music store Sonic Boom, but is too shy to sing herself. Calum Worthy (Dez) is Austin’s nutty best friend and is always getting Austin and himself into trouble.

ASSIGNMENT X sat down with Ross at Radio Disney’s N.B.T. Kick-Off Concert held at Hollywood and Highland recently and talked about the show and his real life music career with the band R5, which consists of Ross, his siblings Riker, Rydel, Rocky and along with their best friend Ratliff, are the five R’s of R5. Recently they were signed to Hollywood Records.

ASSIGNMENT X: How did you get the role on AUSTIN & ALLY?

ROSS LYNCH: Just like any other job you just go through a lot of auditions and hope for the best.

AX: You do play a lot of instruments, even on the show?

LYNCH: Yes, I play guitar, bass, drums and piano and a bit of ukulele and I’ve recently picked up the violin, but it’s not my best instrument. (Laughs)

AX: Do you write your own songs?

LYNCH: Not for the show, mainly because I am focusing writing songs for my band R5. Although I haven’t written many because I’m just so busy with the AUSTIN & ALLY schedule, but hopefully in the album that will come out in early 2013 I will have a song on there.

AX: What process do you use when you write the songs?

LYNCH: Whatever comes first. It could be a cool guitar lick or a cool melody or even a cool line…whatever comes first and you just try to add on to it and grow it into a song.

AX: Anything special that the band does before going on stage?

LYNCH: I basically just go crazy. Just push my brothers around and kind of wrestle and then we get in a huddle and we put our hands in and we say, “Ready, Set, Rock.”

AX: Have you ever had any weird fan encounters?

LYNCH: I was in a hot tub with my brother and a fan came up and thought my brother was me. And they were going “oh my gosh your Austin on AUSTIN & ALLY and I was like no, actually that is me. And they were like “no it’s him.” And I was “no seriously it’s me.” And finally I ended up singing for them and they finally believed me.

AX: Do you consider yourself like a boy band even though your sister’s in it?

LYNCH: We are not actually a boy band, we’re like a band, band. We play all the instruments. So I feel like out biggest inspiration is like McFly, and Fallout Boy, kind of like the more band type stuff.

AX: What was the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you on stage?

LYNCH: Nothing really embarrassing has happened to me on stage, but it didn’t happen to me but one of my brothers Rocky was rocking out pretty hard and he hit his head on his guitar and his head started bleeding. But that wasn’t really awkward, it was kind of cool…it was like Rock N’ Roll you know! That was kind of a fun moment!

AX: The music that you do with the band is totally different then what you do on AUSTIN & ALLY?


LYNCH: In a way. AUSTIN & ALLY is more sense and more kind of poppy, but for our band it’s very guitar driven and it’s more rock.

Behind The Scenes of Austin & Jessie & Ally All Star New Year

Disney Channel have released a behind the scenes look of the Austin & Ally and Jessie crossover special, 'Austin & Jessie & Ally All Star New Year.'

In the episode episode, Austin, Ally, Trish and Dez have trouble getting through New York’s crowded Times Square on New Year’s Eve, but Jessie comes up with a plan to get them to the stage in time to see Austin perform — and ultimately have him record one of her songs, natch. Bonus: The episode includes a duet by Debby Ryan and Ross Lynch.

"All Star New Year" will premiere on Friday, December 7, part of Disney Channel's second annual Fa-la-la-lidays programming block.
