AUSTIN & ALLY star Ross Lynch on fame, music and family

[Via assignmentx.com...]

Ross Lynch stars as Austin Moon on Disney Channel’s hit show, AUSTIN & ALLY. Austin, an overnight Internet sensation is trying to make it big in the music business. With the help of his friend Trish De la Rosa (Raini Rodriguez) who manages Austin, which sometimes backfires no matter how hard she tries. Finally signed to a record label, Starr Records his dream is about to come true, along with his good friend Ally Dawson (Laura Marano) who writes all his songs. Ally works at her fathers music store Sonic Boom, but is too shy to sing herself. Calum Worthy (Dez) is Austin’s nutty best friend and is always getting Austin and himself into trouble.

ASSIGNMENT X sat down with Ross at Radio Disney’s N.B.T. Kick-Off Concert held at Hollywood and Highland recently and talked about the show and his real life music career with the band R5, which consists of Ross, his siblings Riker, Rydel, Rocky and along with their best friend Ratliff, are the five R’s of R5. Recently they were signed to Hollywood Records.

ASSIGNMENT X: How did you get the role on AUSTIN & ALLY?

ROSS LYNCH: Just like any other job you just go through a lot of auditions and hope for the best.

AX: You do play a lot of instruments, even on the show?

LYNCH: Yes, I play guitar, bass, drums and piano and a bit of ukulele and I’ve recently picked up the violin, but it’s not my best instrument. (Laughs)

AX: Do you write your own songs?

LYNCH: Not for the show, mainly because I am focusing writing songs for my band R5. Although I haven’t written many because I’m just so busy with the AUSTIN & ALLY schedule, but hopefully in the album that will come out in early 2013 I will have a song on there.

AX: What process do you use when you write the songs?

LYNCH: Whatever comes first. It could be a cool guitar lick or a cool melody or even a cool line…whatever comes first and you just try to add on to it and grow it into a song.

AX: Anything special that the band does before going on stage?

LYNCH: I basically just go crazy. Just push my brothers around and kind of wrestle and then we get in a huddle and we put our hands in and we say, “Ready, Set, Rock.”

AX: Have you ever had any weird fan encounters?

LYNCH: I was in a hot tub with my brother and a fan came up and thought my brother was me. And they were going “oh my gosh your Austin on AUSTIN & ALLY and I was like no, actually that is me. And they were like “no it’s him.” And I was “no seriously it’s me.” And finally I ended up singing for them and they finally believed me.

AX: Do you consider yourself like a boy band even though your sister’s in it?

LYNCH: We are not actually a boy band, we’re like a band, band. We play all the instruments. So I feel like out biggest inspiration is like McFly, and Fallout Boy, kind of like the more band type stuff.

AX: What was the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you on stage?

LYNCH: Nothing really embarrassing has happened to me on stage, but it didn’t happen to me but one of my brothers Rocky was rocking out pretty hard and he hit his head on his guitar and his head started bleeding. But that wasn’t really awkward, it was kind of cool…it was like Rock N’ Roll you know! That was kind of a fun moment!

AX: The music that you do with the band is totally different then what you do on AUSTIN & ALLY?

LYNCH: In a way. AUSTIN & ALLY is more sense and more kind of poppy, but for our band it’s very guitar driven and it’s more rock.

Debby Ryan on Filming Season Two of Jessie With Teen Vogue Magazine

[Via teenvogue.com...]

The nineteen-year-old actress and singer opens up about her Disney show, love of high fashion, and desire to record an album.

What can we expect to see on this season of Jessie?
“More shenanigans and adventures with the kids my character babysits. It’s pretty intense and there’s a big mystery. The premiere is a really good indication of how epic things are throughout the season. I spend most of the episode with blood all over my dress, holding a butcher knife.”

How do you relate to your character?
“The show’s writers have known me since I was fourteen, so they’ve seen me grow up and go on dates. They’ve been able to write a character for me that who has unfortunate luck when it comes to boys, but laughs it off. This season, it’s been exciting to have a bit of a say in the character that I am playing. They have me do the craziest stunts and know I’m game, which is great because I’m preparing to do an action movie.”

We heard they’re making Jessie into a TV movie. When will it premiere, and how will it differ from the show?
“We’ll shoot it within the next few months, and then it’ll be out in 2013. You’re going to get to know so much more about Jessie as a person—her upbringing, her family, everything. It’s really Jessie-focused.”

You’ve acted in several different Disney shows. As your career progresses, what do you hope to achieve?
“I love my relationship with Disney and I want to stick around in front of and behind the camera with the company. I realize that like all shows, Jessie has an expiration date, but I’m enjoying it so much right now. It’s a difficult balance to strike because I read so many scripts, and I don’t want to grow up too quickly. I started in the industry to be a dramatic actor. I wanted to make people cry and think about their lives and existence. But I don’t want to outgrow my fans, and the most important thing to me is being a nineteen-year-old first. Jessie is very me. I’m growing up way faster than I feel like people can see. The fashion world has been a way for me to branch out and show that older, more sophisticated side of me.”

Who are your favorite designers?
“Tory Burch nails it all the time. I’m a fan of Alice + Olivia and J Brand. Sam Edelman shoes are great for day-to-day and a pair of Brian Atwood’s never hurt anybody. I aspire to wear Balenciaga and Celine—I’ve had my eye on this Celine bag for the longest time.”

What are you wearing today?
“I’m wearing a vintage ACDC shirt, a vintage skirt from London, and massive Alice + Olivia heels. I’m rocking a watch that I stole from my Grandma’s jewelry box. That makes it sound like I steal from the elderly—I didn’t actually steal it!”

Any plans to attend college?
“I would benefit from higher education. In the same way that people are picking their classes and majors, I’m going to work on producing as well as writing to get hands-on experience. I would love to take online classes.”

Do you plan on releasing an album?
“I never thought about it as something I would do. I’m so busy with my acting career, and I don’t think that you can fully have two careers—one always takes the backseat. Most of the songs that people have heard me sing are cover songs, and it’s important for me to not make bubblegum pop. Growing up, I listened to rock ‘n’ roll. I’m writing music now now for an artist and getting her vibe so I can tell her story. There are several songs left over and they don’t fit anyone’s sound except for mine, so I think I’ve accidentally made an album that I haven’t produced yet.”

If you were to record one, what would it sound like?
“My album would have live instruments—guitars and drums. It would be piano-driven because that’s how I tend to write a lot of my songs. I like Bob Dylan and Robert Costello, so I’m a fan of folk, and it would have an earthy-type quality to it. A good indication would be if The Hush Sound meets Mumford & Sons meets Automatic Loveletter meets Katy Perry. I guess we’ll find out!”

Disney Channel Star Debby Ryan Knows What Kids Want

[Via backstage.com...]

To most fans, Debby Ryan appears preternaturally lucky. By age 19, she has an established career in television and film, with ventures in music and fashion in the works. She currently stars on the popular Disney Channel original series “Jessie," which premiered its second season on Oct. 5. Behind the charmed life is a persistent work ethic that keeps Ryan grounded and focused.

The multi-talented star took a break from her nonstop schedule to talk with Backstage about the hard work it takes to make it all look easy.

Do you think your previous Disney Channel show, “The Suite Life on Deck,” as well as Disney Channel movies like “16 Wishes” gave “Jessie” an early advantage?
Debby Ryan: I definitely do. And I’d be lying if I said that [Disney] fans weren’t a huge deciding factor in doing the show. When “The Suite Life” came to a close, people were so heartbroken. I felt this loyalty to them. So I absolutely took that into consideration and I’ve been really blessed. I think that my fans know that I take care of them and they take care of me. I didn’t think that after my first Disney show that I’d be sticking around TV for very long, and now it’s so much of my heart.

What do you think is the effect of having an audience that is almost entirely comprised of teens and kids?
Ryan: I think you become acutely aware of what kids are into. And being a co-producer this season, it’s making TV about kids for kids by kids. I’m making jokes and scenes that I would like to see. We do a live audience show and having that energy and connection to the audience is so key in what we do. Sometimes the audience will laugh at things we didn’t even know were funny.

It’s so cool that you’re going to co-produce. How did you get into that?
Ryan: It started on “The Suite Life." I would sit in the writer’s room and shadow the directors long after the scenes were done. So Disney said, “We like what you’re bringing to your projects both on and off camera.” I believe that you can learn the most by doing.

On “Jessie”, you play a small-town Southern girl who becomes a nanny for a high-profile wealthy family in New York City. What do you think it is about the fish-out-of-water characters that is so appealing to audiences?
Ryan: It’s absolutely relatable. I grew up moving around. I went to seven different schools, so I know what it’s like to be that new girl and have to not only know who you are but also take that into foreign circumstances and know how to respond. Jessie is not the best nanny in the world; we’ll just say it. But she loves the kids so much it overcomes anything. I’d venture to say that success is usually bred out of having no other choice other than failure. It’s refusing to hit the ground, and if you do, refusing to stay there.

And you and Jessie both come from military families.
Ryan: We do. After playing Bailey on “The Suite Life,” I didn’t want to play a country girl again. There are a lot of military bases in Texas. I’ve lived there. So I wanted to show a girl from a military family. I went to school on a military base in Germany. I got a lot of my clothes at the army surplus store.

You're very active on Tumblr and YouTube, with the Debby Ryan Official channel where you answer fan questions. Is there an expectation today for performers to make themselves fully accessible to their fans?
Ryan: I think there’s absolutely that expectation. You’re one person and the more you give, the bigger your fan base. But you can never give them everything they want to know. You feel that you owe them answers and they feel entitled to answers. It’s a really interesting balance and even the balance between celebrities – not being too personal in each other’s lives. I’m introverted by nature, and I need to have some things of my own. I think there’s also something beautiful about mystery.

If an eighteen year-old decides to move to New York or L.A. to pursue acting, what advice would you offer?
Ryan: Don’t do what Jessie did! You can’t show up empty-handed. Be ready for anything. Know who you are intrinsically. Know what your boundaries are and what kind of content you refuse to do. There have been times when I had an opportunity that could have been massive but it would have withered away at my soul.

Many sitcoms today portray diverse families, but not many portray families with adopted children. What do you think the Ross family can say to viewers about adoptive and diverse families?
Ryan: That a family is a family. A big brother will drive you crazy whether or not they’re born from the same parents as you. A little sister – you’ll want to watch her grow up whether or not you have the same skin color. It’s the most beautiful thing to give someone a family.

Katherine McNamara talks about Disney Channel Movie “Girl Vs. Monster and Disney XD’s “Kickin’ It”

[Via mediamikes.com...]

Katherine McNamara is co-starring in Disney Channel Movie of the week “Girl Vs. Monster”, which premieres on October 12th.  Katherine is also a recurring cast member on Disney XD’s “Kickin’ It”.  Media Mikes had a chance to chat with Katherine about her new roles and also what she has planned next like ”Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn” next year.

Mike Gencarelli: Tell us about making you Disney Channel Movie of the week debut in “Girl Vs. Monster” Katherine McNamara: I am just so excited for this movie. Being on the Disney Channel has been a dream of mine. It is really thrilling for me, especially on a movie like this. It is your quintessential Halloween movie, in my opinion. There is action, adventure, Halloween spooks and scares, special effects, stunts, a little bit of romance and lots of great music that everyone is going to love. I got to work with such talented and wonderful people on this movie. I just feel so blessed and lucky to be able to work on such a great project.

MG: Give us some background on your character Myra? KM: She is a really interesting character. I really get to play like three different characters in the movie since she goes through such a wide metamorphosis. The first she is the stereotypic mean high school girl. She is very conniving and narcissistic. She also has this huge rivalry with the main character Skylar Lewis (played by Olivia Holt). The next phase she gets possessed by a monster about half way through. That was really interesting because my character gets a complete makeover both physical and personality-wise. Towards the end of the movie, she realizes the error of her ways, if you will, and becomes a nice person and friend of the Skylar.

MG: What was the highlight of working on this film?
KM: There are so many wonderful things. I think it would have to be the music and the wonderful lifetime friendships I have made. Everyone on the film was just incredible, the cast and crew. We all got very close and spent literally every moment together. We just had the most phenomenal time together. Also music is such a passion of mine and I got to sing on a couple of the songs in the film. It is really wonderful. The music is really so great.

MG: Also tell us about playing Claire on Disney XD’s “Kickin’ It”? KM: ”Kickin’ It” is such a great show. One of my good friends, Dylan Snyder, is one the show. He introduced me to the cast, visit the set and hang out before Claire was even a distant thought in the minds of the writers. Eventually when this audition came up, I was so excited. Getting to work with your friends is better than anything. When I booked the role it was just a guest star but now it is recurring. It is a dream comes true. I love that show.

MG: You are playing Becky Thatcher in “Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn” next year, tell us about that film?
KM: The Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn story is very near and dear to my heart my whole life. I grew up in Missouri just a few hours from where the stories are set. So getting an opportunity to play such an iconic character is really an honor for me. Also to get to work with great talent like Joel Courtney and Jake T. Austin was just icing on the cake for me. We filmed it in Bulgaria, which is such an amazing and beautiful place. It was my first time out of the US and I loved every minute of it. I learned so much and it was so different. I got another lifelong friendship out of that film. Joel and I are completely inseparably.

MG: You are non-stop working, Flash forward to next summer you have “Contest”, can you tell us about that project?
KM: I just have to say, I feel so blessed being able to work so much. It is something I love doing. I just want to keep working, which is how I will learn and grow. “Contest” was such an amazing film. It is with Danny Flaherty from “Skins” and Kenton Duty from “Shake it Up”. It is about bullying and is a really great story that needs to be heard. Bullying has become such an epidemic and almost like the norm in school and kids to expect it. It is not acceptable. I have been through so much bullying in my life and I don’t think any kid should have to experience that. So, I am hoping that this movie will bring some awareness to this issue and its effects.

Former North Texas resident stars in Disney's 'Jessie'

[Via star-telegram.com...]

Tweenage girls often emit high-frequency sounds when they meet Debby Ryan.

Some of them start to hyperventilate as well. A few just break down altogether and start to cry.

It's something that Ryan, the 19-year-old star of Jessie, a popular Disney Channel sitcom, hasn't quite gotten used to yet. Frankly, she's not sure she ever will.

"I don't spend much time thinking about the fact that people know who I am," says Ryan, an actress who used to call North Texas home. "When I get that kind of reaction, it's very disarming."

But her young fans adore her so much that they get so excited and can't control themselves.

"You know what I've found helps when they start to cry?" Ryan says. "I give them a big hug. That seems to do the trick. Massive hugs all around. Hugs seem to make everything better."

If Jessie gets any more popular, Ryan's arms are going to be sore from so much hugging.

The show, which begins its second season at 7:30 p.m. Friday, is consistently among the most-watched on cable, averaging 3.5 million viewers for every first-run episode. It's TV's No. 2-ranked show among kids ages 2 to 11 and No. 3 among kids ages 9 to 14.

"That's amazing and incredibly gratifying," Ryan says. "More than anything else, I'm really liking it when the fans come up and say, 'This thing that you did inspired me,' or 'That story that you told made me realize something about myself,' or 'That episode made me feel better about me and my family situation.'"

Jessie is about a small-town girl who leaves Texas for the bright lights of New York City, where she winds up working as a nanny to four rambunctious kids. In Season 2, Jessie will explore her passion for acting and writing, while juggling a budding romance with Tony, the building's handsome young doorman.

It's the kind of high-energy sitcom that often has Ryan, a redhead with a flair for physical comedy, displaying her best Lucille Ball-Carol Burnett-Debra Messing moves.

A gift for zany

"I'm just a massive goofball," Ryan says. "I've always been that way. So I love doing pratfalls and spit-takes and getting the laugh. If the script calls for me to be doing stunts, like being strapped into a harness and hanging upside-down with something dripping on my face, that's just so fun for me.

"The best compliment that anybody can ever give me is when they say, 'Wow, that was such a Lucy moment.'"

Ryan lived in Keller until 2008. At 15, she moved to California to pursue a showbiz career. She quickly landed a role as Bailey Pickett in Disney Channel's The Suite Life on Deck.

When Suite Life ended its three-season run, executive producer Pamela Eells O'Connell developed Jessie to showcase the many things that Ryan can do.

"The first season fulfilled all of my expectations in every way," Ryan says. "I knew I was going to work really hard. I knew that I was going to make a funny show. I knew it was going to be a very comfortable set and that every single person working on the show would feel valued.

"Now, heading into the second season, having created a family that viewers like and can relate to, we have the opportunity to take this family into new situations and do even better work. That's exciting."

Singing on hold

Still, it's worth noting that we haven't really seen everything that Ryan can do. She's also an aspiring singer, songwriter and music producer.

Ryan has performed a few numbers in Disney Channel projects. That includes singing the Hey, Jessie theme song that opens every episode. But for the most part, she has resisted launching a full-on second career, because she doesn't want her music to seem "manufactured."

"I hold myself to a higher standard than that," Ryan says. "I have too much love for music and too much respect for the industry. It's been about four years that I've had opportunities, and I've turned most of them down. People say to me, 'What's taking so long? Just cut a record already.'

"But I want it to be genuine and completely personal and to have my absolute mark on it."

Given her big, bubbly on-screen personality, some fans might be surprised to learn that Ryan is actually rather introverted by nature.

"I can turn it on and off, but performing really shouldn't have happened for me," she says. "Growing up, I was incredibly shy and terrified. I was the girl who would hide behind her mom's skirt.

"Even now, I prefer small groups. I'm not really into the big party scene and whatnot. I need to be a little bit reserved. I unwind and refuel alone."

Yet there's something about performing that fulfills Ryan like nothing else can.

"When I go onstage and I act or sing, I never feel more alive," she says. "That's when I feel like everything makes sense. It's terrifying and invigorating at the same time."

'Jessie' star Debby Ryan the latest in a long line of Disney princesses

LOS ANGELES - Debby Ryan's life is not necessarily an open book, but it is fodder for episodes of her Disney Channel series "Jessie."

"The writers will ask me, 'Has this ever happened to you in real life?' and I'm like, 'This, this and this and let me know if you need names and numbers.' They are mostly interested in my misadventures and boy trouble," Ryan says during a break from filming the TV show.
After spending three seasons as a supporting cast member on "The Suite Life on Deck," Ryan is starring in her own series. First season episodes drew an average of 3.5 million viewers, making it one of the top-rated shows with young viewers. The second season starts at 8:30 p.m. EDT Friday on the Disney Channel.

One of the episodes in the new season is based on what happened when Ryan went on her very first date a few months ago and her young suitor ended up in the emergency room - twice.

"You would think that would be the worst date ever but my life is like a sitcom. If you say, 'What else could go wrong?' it's only a challenge," Ryan says. "The writers have known me since I was 14, so they know nothing is off limits. They take it and run with it. So a lot of things you see on 'Jessie' are just me."

Ryan, 19 and an Alabama native, follows in the footsteps of other young actresses who have starred in Disney projects: Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez. It might seem like Ryan's the next overnight success, but she's been acting since she was 7. She has appeared in projects from the direct-to-DVD "Barney: Let's Go to the Firehouse" to the feature film "The Longshots."

Ryan says being at the center of her own series has been a huge learning experience.

"To be the star of a show is a huge thing and if you think about it, it will freak you out. So I try not to think about it and keep all my plates spinning," Ryan says. "But I'm the kind of person that if I look away from the plates, I'll find five more to start spinning."

Along with the series, those plates include writing music with her older brother, participating in charitable events such as Disney's Friends for Change, writing a fashion blog and creating her own clothing line. Ryan also found time to play two very different roles in guest spots on "Private Practice" and "The Glades."

Despite the success - and her million-and-a-half Twitter followers can attest to this - Ryan has remained very humble. Her biggest joy is making her family proud. She wants to be the kind of person her parents raised her to be while finding her own way.

Just as the actress has grown in the past year, so has her series.

"The show still has the self-discovery. Jessie is strong and resourceful but she's still trying to figure herself out," Ryan says. "She's a 19-year-old girl who's trying to figure out life and I feel this season we are running with that more."

It's an easy role to play - after all Ryan's also looking for those answers. The only difference is her quest for knowledge is often the stuff of which dream scripts are made.

Debby Ryan Covers 'Cliche' September 2012

[Via www.justjaredjr.com...]

Debby Ryan shows off an edgier side of herself on the September 2012 cover of Cliche magazine.

The 19-year-old actress opened up about getting into entertainment with the mag.
“Comedy is such a culture,” Debby shared. “I thought: I could do that. I actually wanted to start with drama. I did so much theatre when I was younger. I remember hiding in the curtain in — between scenes — and watching.”

She added about her current role as the title character on Disney Channel’s Jessie: “Jessie’s much braver than I am. It takes a certain kind of person who will pick up and move [alone]. [Also] being a strong woman — girls who can fight for themselves.”

This weekend, IM5 and Bella Thorne performed a live, FREE show at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles.  The music was loud and the crowd was huge!  It was a night that we’ll never forget, and the best part?  We got to chat with all of the performers before the show!

It’s always a pleasure to chat with Bella.  She was super excited to be performing for her crowds of fans, and we loved seeing her up on stage with IM5.  So what did the ‘Shake It Up’ star have to say about Friday’s event and her upcoming projects?

Fanlala: This event is wrapping up the summer, tell us about what’s happening at CityWalk!

Bella Thorne: I go to CityWalk all the time with my friends, I love coming here.  And I’m always thinking “I wonder if I could perform on stage.”  And tonight I get to, this is awesome.  It’s my first time on the CityWalk stage.  I get to do my song with IM5, and it’s just really sweet.  The band themselves are just really sweet.

F: What do you like most about performing with IM5?

BT: I’m always working on my voice, practicing behind-the-scenes on singing.  And every time I nail it, they’re just like “YES Bella! Yeah!”  They really encourage me big time when I go onstage, and that really helps.  This is our second time performing together, and I really like working with them.

F: What was it like going on stage with IM5 after the Teen Choice Awards?

BT: That was super cool, and I had all my friends there. And that’s what really helped during that set.  I was glad to have their support, and in the end support is what you really need.

F: Earlier this week, we saw you in studio.  Are there any upcoming songs that you can tell your fans about?

BT: I’m really excited.  I recorded a Christmas song, I recorded another song, also.  I’m also talking to a record company, so I really like that.  You guys, there are a lot of things coming.

F: After the huge success of ‘Made In Japan’ we want to know what’s in store for ‘Shake It Up’ in the future.

BT: This season is pretty awesome, I learned so much about my family, and I’m really close to my family, we’re really close-knit.  To be part of a show that’s made for families is really good for me.
This season you guys can expect some huge changes.  It’s really gonna shock everyone.  And we know our fans are just gonna be like “What?? What?!” but in a really good way.  We’re going to have really relatable situations, so there’s a lot to look forward to in the next season.

F: We know you’re actually an ambassador for Disney Channel’s Friends for Change, what have you been working on with them lately?

BT: We’re very much into anti-bullying and the anti-bullying campaign.  I enjoying being a part of the cause, and really getting the word out.  Standing up against bullying is my expertise, and it’s something that’s very near and dear to me.
