Disney’s ‘Teen Beach Movie’ Hangs Ten with Brands

[Via Variety.com...]

Given previous hits like 'High School Musical,' marketers flock to latest Disney Channel Original Movie

Marketers typically shy away from pairing up with films unless they’re based on an existing — and already popular — property. But with hits like “High School Musical,” “Camp Rock” and “The Cheetah Girls,” the Disney Channel Original Movie has become enough of a brand magnet on its own.

To help hype the release of next month’s “Teen Beach Movie,” Disney Channel has lined up Best Western and Honda, who will both launch pricey nationwide ad campaigns for the surf-rock musical. The hotel chain’s campaign will also stretch into Canada.

The film is essentially Disney Channel’s homage to the beach-set musicals of the 1960s like “Beach Party” and “Beach Blanket Bingo,” that starred former Mouseketeer Annette Funicello, as well as “Grease” and “Austin and Ally.”

Directed by Jeffrey Hornaday (Disney Channel’s “Geek Charming”), “Teen Beach Movie” revolves around high school friends who find themselves transported into their favorite movie, “Wet Side Story.” David Lawrence (“High School Musical”) produced the score.

Retailers including Walmart, Target, Toys R Us, Kohls, Kmart and Disney Stores also are ready to fill store shelves with “Teen Beach Movie” merchandise, with each getting their own product lines that spans apparel, home decor, dolls, bedding, lunch kits, books, stationery and school supplies aimed at 6-14-year-olds.

Taking a bet on an unknown property is risky — especially with merchandise featuring characters kids don’t yet know. But Disney Channel has been able to tout the success of its previous pics and popularity of stars it has cast in “Teen Beach Movie” to attract partners.

Over the past 11 years, Disney Original Movies have ranked as TV’s top film among tweens. Nearly six years after its premiere, “High School Musical 2” is still the No. 1 scripted cable TV telecast of all time with 18.7 million total viewers.

The “Teen Beach Movie” cast also includes Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell and Grace Phipps, stars of Disney Channel hits “Austin & Ally” and ABC Family’s “The Fosters” and “The Nine Lives of Chloe King.” Ross also headlines the band R5.

Those elements enticed Best Western to return and promote a Disney Channel film for the sixth time (it started with “Camp Rock”), while “Teen Beach Movie” will mark Honda’s fourth (that kicked off with “High School Musical 2”).

“When you have companies coming back four and six times, it’s because it worked,” said Rita Ferro, executive VP, Disney media sales and marketing. “It’s a Disney Channel Original Movie and that’s a franchise for us that’s consistently been the number one movie on cable year after year.”

Both Best Western and Honda will launch TV, radio, online, mobile and social media ads, and sponsor sweepstakes for the film, which premieres on Disney Channel on July 19. The film bows even earlier on July 15 to registered users of the WATCH Disney Channel app on mobile devices and WATCHDisneyChannel.com.

As part of its deal, Honda will get a sponsored by credit on the film, repeats and its planned sing-along special. The automaker will also create a co-branded destination on DisneyChannel.com, which will promote the company’s Odyssey minivan.

In addition to its planned marketing, Best Western will sponsor episodes of “Austin & Ally,” to extend its association with Lynch, and a portal on Disney.com that will enable kids to create mashups of “Teen Beach Movie” content to share with friends.

The movies “aren’t only about kids,” Ferro said. “It’s about the cross-family audience. The audience reach is so broad. It’s an entry point for multiple generations.”

The partners should also be able to benefit from their tie-in with the homevid release, as well, which will debut exclusively at Walmart on July 19, and at most other retailers on July 30, close to its TV bow.

A soundtrack becomes available July 16 from Walt Disney Records that features 12 songs plus three instructional bonus tracks offering up dance lessons.

Disney Channel also is producing a 10-city “Teen Beach Movie Beach Party” event tour at Simon Malls, Radio Disney events in 31 markets across the U.S., and is tossing out seven foot “Teen Beach Movie” branded beach balls at One Direction and R5 concerts across the U.S.

Radio Disney Stations Up for Sale (EXCLUSIVE)

[Via Variety.com...]
Sale of stations in small- to mid-sized markets will enable Disney to focus on top 25 markets

In the latest cost-cutting move at Disney, the company is seeking buyers for six AM and one FM radio station that are part of the Radio Disney portfolio in the United States.

Disney Media Networks is handling the sale of the stations in small- to mid-sized markets: Albany, New York; Kansas City, Missouri; Little Rock, Arkansas; Milwaukee, Wisc.; Richmond, Virginia; Salt Lake City, Utah; and San Antonio, Texas. The radio station in Little Rock is on the FM dial.

It is unclear just how much coin Disney could collect from the sale of the stations aimed at kids, tweens and families. The company does not break out results from its radio stations in earnings reports, incorporating them, instead, with the media networks group, which also includes broadcast and cable TV networks like ABC, Disney Channel and ESPN.

Disney still considers Radio Disney a strong asset — especially as a platform to promote its young Walt Disney Records and Disney Channel stars, as well as company TV shows, theme parks, online, game and film properties.

But it sees the sale as a way for Burbank-based Radio Disney to focus on the 24 stations it operates in the top 25 markets, with the exception of Baltimore, Maryland. New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Dallas round out the top five.

Sale also comes as Disney is looking to boost revenue and improve profit margins companywide through the sale of assets or staff reductions.

This isn’t the first time Disney is looking to sell off Radio Disney stations. It silenced six stations in 2010, also in small- to mid-market cities like Riviera Beach, Florida and Portsmouth, Virginia, as it sought buyers.

All of Radio Disney’s stations, are supported by local and national advertisers, while it also generates revenue from national advertisers on its digital and satellite distribution platforms like RadioDisney.com, SiriusXM satellite radio, iTunes Radio Tuner, Facebook and mobile phones. Programming can also be downloaded via the iTunes Store.

“In the past year, we’ve driven new content delivery and ad sales revenue opportunities with Radio
Disney Junior and the Radio Disney Music Awards, among others initiatives, and we intend to build on those opportunities while keeping our organization strong and focused on serving our listeners with programming that entertains and is appropriate for kids- and families,” said Phil Guerini, VP, programming and general manager, Radio Disney, in a statement.

Disney also operates 12 Radio Disney stations in South America, which are not part of the sale.

Disney kept ownership of Radio Disney when it sold ABC Radio Holdings to Citadel Broadcasting Corp in 2007. Sale at the time consisted of 22 large-market radio stations and the ABC Radio Network.

Radio Disney started broadcasting in late 1996, with the slogan, “We’re all ears.” It launched Radio Disney Music Awards in 2002.

Inside Disney Channel's Locally Produced 'Violetta'

[Via thewaltdisneycompany.com...]

By Sarah Smith, The Walt Disney Company

Just over a year ago, Violetta, a tween-oriented telenovela developed by Disney Channel Latin America and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), first debuted in Latin America and Italy after months of planning and development. With its relatable storylines, catchy tunes and brilliant international cast, the original series didn’t take nearly as long to become a certifiable hit with audiences around the world.

Violetta tells the story of a musically talented teenager (played by Argentine actress Martina Stoessel) who returns to her native Buenos Aires with her father after living in Europe for several years. Once back in her hometown, she quickly discovers the meaning of true love, develops her natural talents and learns her family's real story… all while navigating the trials and tribulations of growing up.

While Violetta is at first a television program, it is also a dynamic multi-platform experience designed to appeal to and engage its multinational tween viewership. Each episode includes original musical numbers — solos, duets and group songs from diverse musical genres — which have since spawned soundtracks and live shows, including Violetta en Vivo, which is set to premiere in Argentina this July. Violetta also offers exclusive extended content to fans through its official websites and social media accounts.

I recently sat down with Cecilia Mendonça, vice president and general manager, Disney Channels Latin America, TWDC Latin America, and Tricia Wilber, chief marketing officer, TWDC EMEA, and general manager, Disney Channels EMEA, to learn more about the locally produced hit show as it launches its second season and gears up to premiere across the rest of EMEA.

Violetta first debuted on May 14, 2012. Why is the show a good fit for Disney Channel?
Cecilia Mendonça (CM):
Violetta is relevant to our audiences, both in Latin America and Europe. It is committed to our brand values at its core, and it meets the quality standards that are a part of Disney Channels’ DNA. The series is also unparalleled for several other reasons: It is the first tween-focused original co-production created between Disney Channels Latin America and Disney Channels EMEA; it’s an unmatched pan-regional and multicultural effort with a very appealing storyline; and it has an extremely talented international cast.

Tricia Wilber (TW):
Violetta has already launched on Disney Channels across Latin America, Italy, Spain, France, Poland, Israel and Central and Eastern Europe to record ratings. The popularity of Violetta has been mirrored across music and consumer products too, demonstrating its growth potential.

Why is it important for Disney Channel to develop shows like Violetta internationally?
TW: It is important to produce local content to appeal to local tastes while maintaining Disney brand values. It makes the program relevant to our international audiences and brings the brand closer to them because it represents what they feel, like and believe. The mix of globally produced content and locally produced content gives us the strongest proposition of Disney-branded entertainment for our audiences.

What do you hope viewers around the world take away from this unique program?
TW: Apart from being great entertainment, Violetta conveys valuable Disney messages and life lessons for kids and teenagers, including the importance of team work, perseverance, friendship and leadership.
CM: We have received lots of feedback from viewers about how they relate to Violetta. This makes me feel confident that we are producing content that speaks their language and addresses relevant issues that are part of their lives.

[Via Disney Channel Press Release...]

DISNEY UNLEASHES CONTEMPORARY SURF-ROCK MUSICAL
"TEEN BEACH MOVIE" WITH SOUNDTRACK PRE-ORDER ON iTUNES TODAY
AND BIG SURF PARTY MOVIE PREMIERE,
FRIDAY, JULY 19 ON DISNEY CHANNEL

-- National Sponsors Honda and Best Western International on Board --

-- DVD with Exclusive Dance Rehearsal Footage and Musical Number Available July 30 -

-- Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell, Garrett Clayton, Grace Phipps, John Deluca, Chrissie Fit, Barry Bostwick, Kevin Chamberlin and Steve Valentine Star --

Disney Channel is primed to unleash Seacat, Giggles, Rascal, Lugnut, Struts, Butchy, Cheechee, Tanner, Lela, Brady and Mack via today's iTunes pre-order of the surf-rock/pop soundtrack for "Teen Beach Movie," an exuberant song, sand and surf fest set inside a retro beach party movie. The storyline depicts how 1960s sensibilities motivate a modern girl to affirm her capability, strengths and goals.

The television premiere of "Teen Beach Movie," a Disney Channel Original Movie sponsored by Honda and Best Western International, is FRIDAY, JULY 19 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel U.S. followed by telecasts on Disney Channels around the world. It will be available Monday, July 15 to verified users on the WATCH Disney Channel app and WATCHDisneyChannel.com.

Made for kids age 6-14 and their families, the summer splash includes event telecasts, a soundtrack from Walt Disney Records in stores nationwide on Tuesday, July 16, licensed product spanning apparel, home decor, fashion dolls, bedding, lunch kits, stationery/school supplies and more available at Walmart, Target, Toys R Us, Kohls, Kmart, Disney Stores and other retailers, a junior novel and e-book, themed stickers, frames and filters in the brand new Disney Channel Photo Finish app, a 10-city "Teen Beach Movie Beach Party" event tour at Simon Malls, "Teen Beach Movie" activities and prizes at Radio Disney events across the U.S., seven-foot "Teen Beach Movie"-branded beach balls at One Direction and R5 concerts across the U.S., and the "Teen Beach Movie" DVD with exclusive video available July 19 exclusively at Walmart, and on July 30 at retailers nationwide.

"Teen Beach Movie" introduces confident, resilient surfer McKenzie and her carefree boyfriend, Brady, a fan of the retro surf musical movie, "Wet Side Story." On the morning of McKenzie's planned departure for boarding school, she and Brady catch one last epic wave which mysteriously carries them right into "Wet Side Story," circa 1962, where they meet Seacat, Giggles, Rascal and Cheechee, among others. Amidst the spontaneous song and dance, there's trouble in paradise -- it's bikers versus surfers for control of the local hangout, but Mack and Brady unwittingly interfere with the movie's star-crossed plot, one that would pair a surfer (teen matinee idol Tanner) and a biker (Lela, the sister of Butchy, the biker gang's leader). Typical of the teen beach movie genre, a kooky subplot has mad scientists Les Camembert and Dr. Fusion scheming to alter weather patterns and take over the local hangout -- and then the world.

Directed by Jeffrey Hornaday (Disney Channel's "Geek Charming," choreographer of "A Chorus Line," "Flashdance") and choreographed by Hornaday and Christopher Scott ("Lemonade Mouth," "Step Up 4"), the movie includes retro hairstyles and make-up (by Loida Jeannot and Dominique Borrell, respectively), richly-hued vintage wardrobe designed by Oscar nominee Ruth Carter ("Amistad," "Malcolm X") and other inspirations of the '60s. The score is by David Lawrence ("High School Musical"). The production design is by Mark Hofeling ("High School Musical").

The story is by Vince Marcello (director, featurette version of the off-Broadway musical "Zombie Prom," and "An American Girl: McKenna Shoots for the Stars") & Mark Landry, and the teleplay is by Marcello, Landry and Robert Horn (writer of "Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure," writer of Broadway's "13" and writer/producer of "Designing Women"). David Buelow ("Bring It On: Fight to the Finish") is the executive producer and Robert F. Phillips ("Teen Spirit," "Valkyrie") is the producer. "Teen Beach Movie" is a production of Rainforest Productions, LLC.

The movie stars Ross Lynch (Disney Channel's "Austin & Ally") as Brady, Maia Mitchell (ABC Family's "The Fosters") as McKenzie, Grace Phipps (ABC Family's "The Nine Lives of Chloe King") as Lela, Garrett Clayton as Tanner, John Deluca as Butchy, Chrissie Fit (ABC's "General Hospital") as Cheechee, Jordan Fisher as Seacat, Mollee Gray (Disney Channel's "High School Musical") as Giggles, Kent Boyd as Rascal, William T. Loftis as Lugnut, Jessica Lee Keller as Struts, Kevin Chamberlin (Disney Channel's "Jessie," Broadway's "The Addams Family") as Dr. Fusion and Steve Valentine (Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie," Disney XD's "I'm In The Band") as Les Camembert. Suzanne Cryer is Aunt Antoinette and Barry Bostwick makes a special appearance as Big Poppa.

Disney Channel and Disney XD National Talent Search 2013 Now Underway

Disney Channel and Disney XD has begun a national talent search seeking talented, young actors, actresses, singers and dancers between the ages of 10 and 17 to be considered for roles in upcoming Disney Channel and Disney XD Original Movies and Televisions Series. If you have a strong desire to act, sing, or dance, then Disney casting directors would love to see you at this open casting call.

The official talent search is among Disney Channel’s and Disney XD’s few annual casting searches in the United States. You DO NOT need to live in Los Angeles for this talent search, as it is open to kids and teens across America. Disney Channel and Disney XD casts the vast majority of actors in Los Angeles due to the large number of talent agents, casting directors, and actors available in the area. However they do hold open casting calls and talent searches in other cities, and even other countries occasionally.
