DISNEY CHANNEL AND DISNEY XD CASTING DIRECTORS BEGIN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TALENT SEARCH
Part of Nationwide Search for Actors, Singers and Dancers, Ages 10-17,
for Upcoming Disney Channel and Disney XD Series and Movies
Casting directors for series and movies for the kid- and family-targeted channels Disney Channel and Disney XD have begun a talent search throughout the greater Southern California area, visiting elementary, middle and high schools, performing arts schools and academies, dance studios and after school programs in search of new talent age 10-17. Led by casting directors Rosalinda Morales ("Bread and Roses," "La Misma Luna" aka "Under The Same Moon") and Pauline O'con ("24"), the search is part of Disney Channel's and Disney XD's ongoing initiative to find, cast and develop diverse young actors, singers and dancers and provide them opportunities to showcase their talent across Disney platforms.
"Diversity" -- in every sense of the word -- is the guidepost for Disney Channel and Disney XD programming which is seen all over the world. Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Coco Jones are among the many successful young actors discovered via official Disney Channel casting calls.
Judy Taylor, senior vice president, Casting and Talent Relations, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, "Our open auditions allow us to find a range of dynamic new talent and through these non-traditional searches we are able to reach kids who might not otherwise have the opportunity to be seen by a professional casting director."
The Southern California talent search is in advance of Disney Channel and Disney XD's annual open call audition held in a new city each year. Details for the next open call will be announced in the coming weeks. Applicants can visit DisneyChannel.com/talentsearch for more information regarding the Southern California talent search and all other upcoming audition opportunities.

Disney Casting Directors Seek Out Both Established and New Talent
There are two types of casting
directors that audition actors for Disney. The first type are called
"in-house" casting executives. The VP of Casting and Talent Relations
for Disney Channel is an example of an in-house casting director who usually
auditions established actors for series regular roles or starring roles for
Disney Channel Original Movies. On the other hand there are many freelance
casting directors who have cast countless Disney Channel shows, as well as
other shows on different networks. These freelance casting directors also
audition established talent for series regulars and starring roles, however
they do bring in newcomers to read for roles if they fit the look that is being
sought for a specific role.
Newcomers are much more likely to be cast
in supporting or recurring roles as opposed to starring or series regulars, but
from time to time an actor with minimal credits does land that coveted top
level role. And it is happening more and more frequently as studios vie to
discover that fresh new face. However, any type of casting director will tell
you that finding talented actors with little experience can be a daunting task.
Disney Channel conducts open casting calls around the United States a couple of
times each year for non-specific roles, and out of the thousands who show up,
only one or two actually make it onto the air. Another example is when Walt
Disney Studios held open calls at many cities during the talent search for the
role of Mattie Ross in the 2010 film "True Grit". In the end, they
hired an actress who had professional credits, training, and a talent agent who
submitted her for the role in Los Angeles.
The most important thing that casting
directors look for on an actors resume is live theatre. Doing plays in youth
theatre groups, community theatre, and summer acting camps is not only
extremely fun, but is also an incredible learning experience. You do not get
the opportunity to do multiple takes for each scene, rather you must nail your
lines dead on in real-time. And the more experience that talent has doing that,
means less takes for each scene when working on a movie or television show.
Training is also important, especially
with reputable acting teachers and coaches. In the big markets such as Los
Angeles and New York, there is an abundance of great acting teachers, many of
which are well connected in the entertainmenbt industry. Often these mentors will
bring in casting directors or talent agents to watch their students perform
scenes. Specialized training such as singing and dancing is also a great thing
to have on your resume.

The Walt Disney Company holdings consist of Marvel Studios, Touchstone
Pictures, The Muppets Studio, Disney Theatrical Group, Pixar Animation Studios,
and Walt Disney Pictures. Their television divisions include Disney Channel,
Disney XD, Disney Jr., and ABC Family among others. So there you have it. The
opportunities are out there, you just have to make the right moves, stay
focused, and follow your heart.

How To Land Disney Channel Auditions For Free
For many kids, the dream of working on a Disney Channel show or movie
may seem like a fantasy too good to ever come true. But the reality is
that if someone is determined enough and willing to work hard, anything
is possible - even acting on a Disney show! Every person who ever worked
one of the networks shows had to start somewhere, from the big famous
stars right down to the bit role players and background extras.
Source: Alan J Baltes
The network still conducts talent searches in various cities each
year, and most are open calls where anyone within a specified age range
can attend. And it does not matter if they are signed with a talent
agent, or if they have had previous acting experience - although taking
acting classes and doing plays can help tremendously.
In addition to the annual general talent searches, DC shoots various shows and movies in cities outside of Los Angeles, and the casting directors sometimes hold open casting calls for specific roles in those cities. Examples are the High School Musical movies which were all filmed in the Salt Lake City area, and the Camp Rock movies which were all filmed in the Toronto area.
As far as any fees or costs associated with DC talent searches, open casting calls, and auditions - there are none! Auditions are always completely free of charge to attend. The only exception is for extras. Disney Channel always contracts out to extras casting companies to hire the extras for their productions. The individual extras casting companies often charge a small fee that may cover photo imaging, administrative costs, etc. This fee is commonly about $15 - $30.
Be aware that there are several unscrupulous websites operating that "scrape" or steal free Disney auditions and casting information from legit websites and use that information to lure people into signing up for a pay-subscription website. They NEVER uses pay-subscription websites for their casting needs, speaking roles or otherwise. Disney Channel auditions, talent searches, and casting calls are always available completely free of charge.
Some of the shows and movies for 2012 include the pilot episodes of "The Little Leftover Witch," "Shmagreggie Saves The World," "Zombies & Cheerleaders," and "Crash And Bernstein"; the series "Austin & Ally," "A.N.T. Farm," "Jessie," "Good Luck Charlie," and "Shake It Up!; the Disney Channel Original Movies "Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie Sequel," and the upcoming "Adventure Quest".

To Protect Shows, Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon Patrol Kids' Web Pages
[Via www.Reuters.com...]
(Reuters) - Young actors in Hollywood have a new hurdle to overcome in their budding careers: Roving studio executives who patrol Twitter, Facebook Inc and other social media sites with the threat of legal action if the young thespians disclose too much.
Talent managers and casting agents say Disney Channel , Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network often monitor posts by cast members on these sites for messages that might harm their shows' prospects with fickle youthful viewers.
The networks order them to take down posts that might reveal too much about characters, plot twists, casting or comments that might offend advertisers.
Social media dogs young actors seeking stage careers as well.
Carol Lynn Sher, an agent for kids seeking parts in Hollywood and on Broadway, said one of her clients lost a job after he posted that he was in the cast of a Broadway show before it was officially announced.
"They pulled the offer. It was devastating," she said. "I sent out a precautionary note to all my clients because of studios' and ad agencies' concerns about social media."
Efforts to rein in the online habits of kids are part of a larger Hollywood campaign to restrict adults, too. And it could become an issue in February contract talks for the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), covering over 150,000 actors, said a lawyer for ad agencies that work with the channels.
"We try to watch their tweets. If we see things that concern us, we raise it with them," acknowledged Sharon Lieblein, vice-president, talent and casting for Time Warner Inc's Cartoon Network. She says she frequently asks kids to delete posts from Facebook or Twitter.
The network asked one of its young stars to take down a tweet disparaging drink retailer Jamba Juice as "disgusting," she added. "I thought it could be a major sponsor."
Disney Channel denies it is heavy-handed and instead insists it works proactively by offering social media training.
"Kids are our business. We know that their first instinct is to go on social media," said Judy Taylor, the Disney Channel's senior vice-president, casting and talent relations.
This summer, Disney instructed the channel's "Good Luck Charlie" cast members not to spill the beans online about the show's plan to introduce a new baby boy to the program's family, the Duncans.
Taylor said Disney often reminds kids to "think before you tweet," which she says helps prevent misfires.
"These things happened in the past and that's why it has happened now less and less," she said.
Viacom Inc's Nickelodeon said its policies have evolved as the use of social media increased.
"We expect our talent to exercise discretion in all aspects of their lives," said Nickelodeon spokesman George Cabico.
The mothers of wannabe stars and their agents were loathe to discuss online restrictions for fear of hurting budding careers.
One mom said the secrecy around Paramount's upcoming "Paranormal Activity 4" was so intense she didn't know the part for which her daughter was auditioning. The mother said she had to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before her 11-year old could try out.
Paramount, a unit of Viacom, declined comment.
"Sometimes we have 2,000 actors sign NDAs before even seeing a script," said casting director Francene Selkirk, who added that the threat of retaliation for a wayward tweet is always there.
"Do it and it could be the end of a casting director seeing you again, or an agent representing you in the future," agrees David O'Connor of O'Connor Casting in Chicago, which specializes in casting for TV, film and commercials.
An NDA obtained by Reuters spells out the consequences, "including without limitation, the right to seek civil and criminal penalties" if a person receiving a screenplay discloses elements of the screenplay "to any member of the press, on blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, MySpace or any other social network."
A company can legally pursue a child for rescinding the terms of an NDA or the child's parents if they agreed to be responsible should the child rescind, said Doug Wood of Reed Smith. But he noted it rarely happens and damages are hard to quantify.
Content companies and SAG-AFTRA are talking informally about the issue, said Wood, who negotiates for advertisers on the collective bargaining agreements. The guild believes NDAs cannot be required for casting calls and auditions.
"We're particularly concerned with supporting and defending our members' First Amendment rights, including in the social media world," said Pamela Greenwalt of SAG-AFTRA. "We generally believe minors are entitled to even greater protections."
But O'Connor is skeptical.
"Think Big Brother isn't watching?" he said. "Think again."
